Peilapalap, Pohnpei: October 20, 2025 - The Pohnpei State Government has mobilized an assessment team to address the continuing drought situation in Kapingamarangi Atoll. Last week, Acting Governor Herolyn S. Movick received an official communication from the Chief Representative of the Kapingamarangi Municipal Government in Pohnpei reporting severe drought conditions that have persisted for the past three months. The communication also detailed the dwindling water supply in community tanks.
With extreme drought conditions expected to continue through December, the Acting Governor convened key cabinet members to plan an immediate response. An interagency team consisting of representatives from the Pohnpei Utilities Corporation (PUC), the Department of Resources & Development (R&D), the Department of Health and Social Services, the Department of Public Safety, and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has been formed to conduct an on-site assessment.
The team, working in coordination with the National Government, is scheduled to depart this evening for Kapingamarangi to evaluate the situation firsthand and determine the most effective course of action to support the community.
The Pohnpei State Government remains committed to ensuring the well-being of all its citizens and will share the assessment team’s findings and recommended actions once they become available.
