Mr. Aziz Haydarov, leading the ADB delegation, provided updates on ongoing ADB-supported initiatives in Pohnpei, including key infrastructure and service improvement efforts in the areas of:
Transportation Sector Development
Renewable Energy Initiatives
Digital Connectivity Improvements
Mr. Haydarov also highlighted progress on a Joint Portfolio Review being conducted collaboratively with the World Bank (WB) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). This review seeks to enhance coordination among development partners and minimize project overlaps across the Pacific region.
In an effort to expand its engagement and strengthen regional presence, ADB shared its plans to establish a subregional office in the North Pacific next year, which will support deeper and more efficient collaboration with Pacific stakeholders.
Additionally, ADB expressed its readiness to explore concessional financing opportunities for the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), especially targeted toward Transportation and Energy. The proposed funding would involve a 60% grant and 40% loan structure, ensuring accessible financial options for high-impact national and state-level development priorities.
Governor Joseph conveyed his appreciation for ADB’s continued partnership, the valuable updates shared, and the commitment to enhancing sustainable development across Pohnpei and the region.
Accompanying Governor Joseph during the meeting was Ms. Shirley Ann Ligohr, Overseas Development Assistance (ODA) Unit Coordinator. Joining Mr. Haydarov was Ms. Maybelline Bing, ADB Senior Country Officer.
