Peilapalap, Pohnpei: September 24, 2025 – The First Pohnpei State Health Symposium began its final day this morning with a major milestone for health care in the outer islands of Pohnpei. In a special ceremony, five Starlink internet satellite systems and over 2,000 solar lamps were officially turned over to the Pohnpei State Government by the FSM Department of Health and Social Affairs, represented by Secretary Marcus Samo.
The Starlink systems, which include one year of free subscription service, will be installed at the health dispensaries in each of Pohnpei’s outer islands. This investment will significantly improve telecommunication capabilities, enabling faster reporting, telemedicine consultations, and better coordination of health services across the state.
Governor Stevenson A. Joseph and Lt. Governor Herolyn S. Movick were present to receive the equipment, along with Director of Health Services Stuard Penias. Governor Joseph, speaking on behalf of the Pohnpei State Government, expressed gratitude to Secretary Samo and the FSM Department of Health and Social Affairs for their continued support, emphasizing the importance of this technology in bridging communication gaps and strengthening health care delivery for the outer islands.
The 2,000 solar lamps will be distributed among the outer islands to support lighting needs for health services, households, and emergency preparedness efforts.
The symposium will continue throughout the day, with panel discussions and working sessions bringing together government leaders, health professionals, community stakeholders, and international partners to align health priorities and address pressing challenges such as non-communicable diseases. The event will officially conclude this evening with a closing reception at AA Getaway Resort in Sekere, Sokehs.
