Pohnpei State Celebrates Successful Conclusion of the 1st Pohnpei State Health Symposium with Farewell Party

AA Getaway, Sekere, Pohnpei: September 24, 2025 – The Pohnpei State Department of Health and Social Services proudly hosted a farewell party at AA Getaway in Sekere, Sokehs, marking the successful conclusion of the 1st ever Pohnpei State Health Symposium. The event, a milestone in advancing healthcare discussions, was attended by distinguished guests, including Governor Stevenson A. Joseph, First Lady Dr. Aina Garstang, Director of the Department of Health and Social Services Stuard Penias, Secretary of the FSM Department of Health and Social Affairs Marcus Samo, and Chairman of the Committee on Health at the 11th Pohnpei Legislature, Senator Shelten Neth.

The farewell party opened with a heartfelt prayer led by Luhkenmoanlap Emerson Eperiam, setting a reflective tone for the evening. In her special remarks, Lt. Governor Herolyn S. Movick highlighted the symposium’s critical discussions on the adequacy of Pohnpei’s health system and the need for transformative changes. “We must ask ourselves if our systems are truly holistic and inclusive, ensuring no one is left behind—sick or otherwise,” Lt. Governor Movick stated, emphasizing the constitutional mandate to provide accessible healthcare for all.
Lt. Governor Movick praised the collaborative efforts between the executive and legislative branches, noting significant progress in increasing the number of healthcare workers and improving access to services. “We are better off in health, financially, and in resources,” she said, while also applauding the dedication of Doha’s service and staff. However, she urged continued improvement, asking, “Is this all adequate? Do our systems reflect compassion in their heart, ensuring the right supply of medication and care?” She called for ongoing leadership and collaboration, stating, “Let us not close with a pat on the back for this first-ever symposium. Tomorrow, we work to make a better, upgraded, and evolved system a reality.”
Senator Shelten Neth, Chairman of the Committee on Health, delivered remarks on behalf of the Speaker and the 11th Pohnpei Legislature, extending congratulations and reaffirming the legislature’s commitment to supporting healthcare advancements in Pohnpei.
Director Stuard Penias also spoke, acknowledging and recognizing the tireless efforts of the Chiefs of the Health and Social Services divisions and all staff who contributed to the symposium’s success. He extended heartfelt gratitude to key donors, UNICEF, and WHO, for their invaluable support in making the event possible.
Secretary Marcus Samo expressed gratitude to all participants for their dedication to improving Pohnpei’s healthcare landscape, reinforcing the importance of collective action.
The farewell party celebrated the symposium’s success while setting a forward-looking vision for a more inclusive, compassionate, and effective health system. The Pohnpei State Government remains committed to working with all stakeholders to ensure a healthier future for all residents.
