Public Safety Week Concludes with Parade and Annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony


Peilapalap, Pohnpei — Governor Stevenson A. Joseph and Lt. Governor Herolyn S. Movick joined the community on Friday, November 21, 2025, for the closing program of Public Safety Week 2025, highlighted by a parade from Spanish Wall to the Pohnpei State Administrative Building in Peilapalap, where the annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony was held.

The ceremony began with opening and closing prayers offered by Wapar Mwomwohdiso, Senior Pastor Raynold Jack, followed by welcoming remarks from Eltes Pelep, Director of the Department of Public Safety.
Governor Joseph reflected on the origins of Public Safety Week, explaining that the event began about four years ago to commemorate the establishment of the Department of Public Safety in 1999, following its transition from the former Department of Justice. He underscored that the week-long activities were created to strengthen public outreach, raise awareness on safety issues, and help students understand the importance of law, responsibility, and community protection.
Addressing police officers and first responders, Governor Joseph expressed appreciation for their dedication, acknowledging the demanding nature of their work and emphasizing the essential role they play in safeguarding Pohnpei.
As the community gathered for the Christmas Tree Lighting, Governor Joseph welcomed the start of the holiday season, noting that it is a time for reflection, gratitude, and unity across the island. He extended his appreciation to all guests, partners, and families who joined the evening’s celebration.
The highlight of the night came when First Lady of Pohnpei Dr. Aina Garstang, First Lady of the FSM Ancelly Simina, and U.S. Ambassador H.E. Jennifer L. Johnson illuminated the Christmas tree following a ten-second countdown led by Master of Ceremonies Denson David, Kous Madolenihmw.
The ceremony brought the community together in the spirit of the season as Pohnpei officially welcomed Christmas 2025.
